According to information compiled from the General Directorate of Meteorology data, the long-term average rainfall in July in the Marmara Region was 22.5 millimeters.
The region received 18.5 millimeters of rain in the same period last year, and 1.2 millimeters last month. This represents a 95 percent decrease in July rainfall compared to the long-term average and a 94 percent decrease compared to the same month last year.
Lowest rainfall in 18 years
Istanbul, Bilecik, Bursa, Kocaeli, Sakarya, and Yalova in the Marmara Region, and Zonguldak in the Western Black Sea region, saw their lowest July rainfall in 65 years. Balıkesir and Çanakkale also recorded their lowest July rainfall in 18 years.
Last month, rainfall in Istanbul, Sakarya, Bursa, Bilecik, Çanakkale and Balıkesir fell to just one day in some places.
WARNING THAT THE DROUGHT WILL CONTINUE
Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Toros, a faculty member at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Department of Climate Science and Meteorological Engineering, said that drought continued in July, just like in June.
Toros emphasized that Turkey was under the influence of high pressure in July, saying, "When we look at the rainfall figures in Istanbul, we see that last July was the driest month in the last 65 years. In the Marmara Region, there was a 95 percent decrease in rainfall compared to normal. The main reason for this is the region's high pressure."
Toros pointed out that Istanbul's temperature values have increased by 2.5 degrees compared to the long-term average, and emphasized that the water level in the dams that supply water to the city has dropped rapidly, with a 13 percent decrease in the water level in the dams in the last month.
Prof. Dr. Toros stated that there was no rainfall system in the near future and that precautions should be taken accordingly.
The occupancy rate in dams has dropped
According to İSKİ (Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration) data, occupancy rates, which reached around 80 percent last March, are now measured at 44.08 percent. The occupancy rates at Istanbul's dams are as follows:
Omerli 40.87 percent
SHORTNESS 56.07 percent
APPLE 63.17 percent
TERKOS 49.01 percent
ALIBEYKOY 27.63 percent
BÜYÜKÇEKMECE 44.62 percent
SAZLIDERE 39.71 percent
ISTARNACAS 31.38 percent
KAZANDERE 26.78 percent
PAPUCDERE 35.85 percent
